Walking half-naked in public places of a metropolis is at least a risky undertaking. Not every girl dares to take such a step. However, the project Uncovered by renowned photographer Jordan Matter brought together more than a hundred brave young women who were clearly not embarrassed by the proposed circumstances.
In the foreword to the book Uncovered, which includes all the footage, Susan Seligson writes: “Is the breast completely hidden behind multi-layered clothing, is it flirty when its owner decides to flirt, or is it completely naked - the breast“requires”answers, provokes ethical questions and "Enters" into violent confrontation with the very notion of "taboo".
The Uncovered project is by no means an idle venture, but part of the program of the Topfree Equal Rights Association (TERA), advocating … freedom of the female breast. Women are fighting for equal rights with men to bare their breasts in public. In addition, the fair sex advocate for a change in the very attitude towards the breast. “The chest is not an object of desire! This is what nature has given us to feed our children, this part of our body that does not belong to anyone but us,”- these are the generalized statements of the representatives of the association.
Now, the authorities of many countries are aggressively disposed towards exposing breasts in public places. They arrest topless women, believing that they are behaving in an unacceptable way.
During six years of work on the project, Jordan photographed more than a hundred half-naked women from the Big Apple. All of them were volunteers, and all of them, regardless of age and profession, were united by one thing - the desire to challenge the Convention that prohibits exposing breasts in public. Many women agreed to be interviewed for the book - they shared their secret fears, experiences, talked about the path to self-acceptance that they overcame. The Uncovered project is an embodied triumph of the female body - not always perfect, but always beautiful.
Jordan Matter is well known for his other project, Dancers among us. Then he filmed dancing people on the streets of New York. Of course, real dancers took part in the project - their professional steps in everyday situations look very unusual and bewitching.
