Sparring Polar Bears, Svalbard
Sparring Polar Bears, Svalbard

Paul Nicklen's photograph shows two young polar bears sparring under the dim winter sun in Norway's Spitsbergen Nature Reserve. The group of islands, also known as Svalbard, is located halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Polar bears thrive here: on the isolated islands of the archipelago, about half of the animals from the entire population of the Berentsev Sea live, grow and gain strength.

Shrimp, Kingman Reef
Shrimp, Kingman Reef

An amazing photograph, the main character of which still needs to be found. Indeed, it is difficult to see at first glance that in the very center of the anemone, between its thin and flexible petal fingers, there is a transparent shrimp. Photo taken by Brian Skerry back in 2007 near Kingman Reef.

Skyscrapers, Dubai
Skyscrapers, Dubai

Every year at the same time, around October, Dubai is plunged into a thick and dense fog, reminiscent of a tousled cotton blanket. This is facilitated by the still high humidity, but already lower air temperature. And given that Dubai is famous for its famous new skyscrapers, including the world's tallest building Burj Khalifa, photographers have a unique opportunity to get their hands on a ton of stunning photos.

Lion, Uganda
Lion, Uganda

In the Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is located in Uganda, lions willingly climb trees to rest or stretch their bones. But this character from Joel Sartor's photograph acts as if he were an aerialist under a circus dome, illuminated by floodlights and preparing for his big hit.

Manhattan solstice
Manhattan solstice

New Yorkers have the opportunity twice a year to enjoy an amazing spectacle called the "Manhattan Solstice" or "Mathattanhenge". Shortly before the summer and winter solstices, the sun sets at the intersection of the streets of Manhattan, and the rays of the setting sun illuminate the north and south sides of the cross streets, literally "shooting" them from west to east. On such days, on the widest streets, a crowd of curious people gathers, armed with cameras and cameras, and it seems that they all came out to bow to the great sun god.

Tundra Trek, Svalbard
Tundra Trek, Svalbard

Apparently, for the author of this photo, as well as for a group of travelers, it was a great day to hike through the arctic tundra, which surprises not only with its living flora, but also fearless deer and arctic foxes. The mountains in the background are no less amazing: it seems that they have some kind of individual, special weather here in Svalbard. And just as special, unusual clouds.

Sea Pens, New Zealand
Sea Pens, New Zealand

These soft corals, which love dim light and are therefore only found at depths, are also called "sea feathers" because they do look like fountain pens. But this is not one animal, but a whole colony of polyps, which form a soft trunk and outgrowths on its walls. The main feature of this living organism is that if disturbed, it begins to glow and gradually "deflate", as if trying to hide.
