On November 18, 2010, Miami is invaded by huge pink snails. It sounds wild, ridiculous and rather implausible. And nevertheless it is so: giant clams will flood the city as part of a joint art project of an international team Cracking Art Group and the italian gallery Galleria Ca d'Oro … The Cracking Art Group is a collective known in Europe for its art that raises the issue of environmental pollution and the need to recycle plastic waste. The installation in Miami was no exception (by the way, the first work of a creative group in the USA). “Recycling is so much talked about in modern culture that it's easy to forget how important it really is,” said Matti Bower, Mayor of Miami Beach. "This fun art project will make people stop in surprise and then think."

The official name of the installation is “The REgeneration Art project”, but most often it is simply called “Pink snails”. Forty-five giant clams will be in sight of residents and visitors of the city for a little over six weeks: from November 18, 2010 to January 3, 2011.

According to the authors, they chose snails as the heroes of their installation, since they convey three different metaphors using the language of contemporary art. The first is related to hearing: the snail shell resembles a human ear. The second has to do with life, because these creatures carry their home on their backs. Finally, the third makes us think about modern technology: in Italian, the @ symbol is called "snail".
