Video: Algebra and Harmony: Geometric Origami by Erik Demaine

American origami master and theorist Erik Demaine gives sheets of paper the geometric shape of a "hyperbolic paraboloid" - simply put, a potato chip with ribs. The trick is that from a scientific point of view, this is practically impossible - this cannot be explained by Demaine himself, who, by the way, has a degree in mathematics.
The shape that, for example, Pringles chips have, is extremely interesting for modern mathematicians - on the Internet you can find a video lecture in which a popular snack is linked to … Einstein's theory of relativity. Until recently, it was believed that it was impossible to give a paper sheet the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid.
Without the ability to scientifically explain how paper holds such a complex shape, Demaine nevertheless continues to put his innovations into practice. He created a whole series of paper sculptures from paraboloid sheets of colored paper. These works earned Demaine the title of one of the best origami masters in the world.
The uniqueness of Demain's sculptures is that they are of interest to both hand-made lovers and mathematicians alike. An attempt to solve the riddle of the hyperbolic paraboloid could unite two spheres that seem extremely distant from each other. “My colleagues and I posed a mathematical problem that inspires art - and we create art that inspires mathematicians,” Demein admits without false modesty.
Scientific paradoxes are often a source of inspiration for artists. You can recall the works of artists with whom regular readers of Kulturologia.ru are already familiar - amazing "tree-art" from Cha Jong Rai and stone installations Michael Grab … Demain's work is another important step towards the convergence of higher mathematics with pure art.

Rural childhood and flowers on the canvases of Elena Salnikova: Harmony, purity and positive emotions
On cold winter days, one very often dreams of a warm spring or a hot summer, and seeing today in our magazine a gallery of paintings by the Russian artist Elena Salnikova, many will certainly remember the barefoot childhood in the village. Flowers and children - this is the theme that the artist has been using in her work for more than a dozen years, giving the sincerity of children's smiles and the beauty of flowers to her viewer. Which, however, is very symbolic - both of them bring harmony, purity and tremendous positive emotions to the world
Origami and light. Geometric Art Projects by Joanie Lemercier
A simple, but very delicate, graceful and airy installation in the form of origami was invented and realized by the French artist Joanie Lemercier, who now lives in Bristol. Using simple geometric shapes, materials and artistic techniques, he created something that at the same time resembles a schematic map of the starry sky, and the same map, but of a large and bustling city at night
John Rockefeller and Laura Spelman: Billions, Austerity, and 50 Years of Family Harmony
John Rockefeller went down in history forever as the first dollar billionaire. In business, there was no man more ruthless and harsh. They called him Mephistopheles of Cleveland and the Reverend Dollar Pastor. At the same time, for half a century he was tenderly devoted to his wife, and at night he wiped the tears of children
Measure harmony with algebra
It has always been believed that harmony cannot be measured by algebra. But recently, with the development of mathematics, technology and human imagination, this stereotype is being actively destroyed. For example, the American photographer and mathematician Nikki Graziano loves to find functions that correspond to a particular natural phenomenon
Geometric 3D origami by Jun Mitani
Japanese professor Jun Mitani works at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tsukuba and is engaged in geometric modeling in the field of computer graphics, and the development of appropriate software. But contrary to all the stereotypes that "physicists" cannot be "lyricists" and scientists are incapable of creating, he is known not at all for his scientific works, but for his creativity. So, June Mitani is enthusiastically engaged in the creation of complex geometric
