After all, street artists are strange people. In many countries, their creativity is not welcomed by the law, but they paint at night and run away from the police. Their works are short-lived, and descendants have a chance to see these masterpieces only in photographs, but not live. And despite this, they take to the streets and continue to create. The works of the American Swoon will complement our collection of works street artists.
Swoon, whose real name is Caledonia Curry, lives in New York. She does not paint on the walls of houses in the literal sense of the word: her works are images cut from paper and glued to buildings. According to the author, when she started doing street art, she immediately decided that it would be something fragile and fickle. And so it happened: her drawings, created mainly on old newspapers, fade in the sun, get wet from the rain and peel off in strong winds.
The heroes of Swoon are not abstract characters, but quite real people living next to her. The artist says that at first she painted her grandfather, then her younger brothers, close friends. Then came the fruit seller from her neighborhood and the courier visiting the neighbors … Swoon loves to walk around town and watch people, so theoretically any New Yorker might one day see his own portrait on the wall of one of the houses.
The artist says that when she worked in Cuba, a crowd constantly gathered around her. People asked many questions: “What are you doing? Who are these people whose images you are pasting on the walls? What are they doing? What are they thinking about? What are their fates? What do you want to tell us? According to Swoon, she never comes up with stories in advance, and her characters are not related to each other, so she is surprised how quickly people come up with stories about each of her characters and tie them together.
Swoon's dream is a DIY city. “I want more participation and less gray masks,” says the artist.
