Majestic maybe lovely, and terrible - and sometimes even simultaneously. Both fear and admiration are very strong emotions; and when a person experiences them at the same time, he becomes like a cat who was simultaneously given milk and pulled by the tail. Perhaps this is what a selection of the best photos will give you. Icelandic volcano Grimsvotn, which only a couple of days ago stopped terrorizing the European sky.
Grimsvotn, the successor of the Eyjafjallajokudl business, began to erupt May 21st at 10 pm (Moscow time): ash and blocks of hot lava flew out of the "devil's forge" to a height of 20 kilometers! Some of these stones became meteorites - the representatives of the Earth in interstellar space. And those who remained on their home planet swirled in clouds and began to fall back on the heads of the Icelanders, and even provided the entire Northern Europe with non-flying weather.
The photographs you see of Grimsvotn were taken by meteorologists and news services throughout the eruption, which lasted almost 4 days. Atmospheric phenomena that accompany this terrible and wonderful natural phenomenonwill not surprise specialists; but for us they look incredibly majestic and menacing. Lightning striking dust clouds (due to friction and electrification of particles carried by the wind), incredible heights of smoke, red sunsets and sunrises … Yes, this is really wonderful. But would we like to be next to them?
In any case, this question was not before the Icelanders. They, already accustomed to such phenomena, steadfastly endure difficulties, the main of which is the settling dust. This is typical of volcanic eruptions of the Plinian (Vesuvian) type, one of which in ancient times destroyed Pompeii, filling them with a layer of ash. In Iceland, there were no such terrible disasters, but the country has become very, very dusty.
Fortunately, the prophecy of the American preacher Harold Camping about end of the world may 21 not fulfilled: Grimsvotn volcano spared everyone. And although almost imperceptible traces from its dusty dome reached even St. Petersburg, the eruption did not entail a single victim, and in our memory we have photographs that make us think about the divine the greatness of nature - beautiful and terrible simultaneously.

Spectacular photos of the eruption of the Cordon Caulle volcano (Chile)
Francisco Negroni is the author of a breathtaking series of photographs about the eruption of the Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile. On a cold winter night, a brave Chilean photographer armed with a camera captured the raging giant from different angles. The scale of the eruption is mesmerizing, I want to believe that this is just a fantastic film with a huge number of special effects, but in fact, lava flows, billowing columns of smoke and lightning cutting the sky are not a fascinating trick
