The installation "The Ring" - an interesting work by the French artist Arnaud Lapierre, was displayed for three days on the Place Vendome (formerly the Place Louis the Great) - one of the "five royal squares" in Paris.
The installation was first presented at the annual Parisian fair of contemporary art FIAC (from Foire internationale d'art contemporain). "Ring" or "Mirror Cube" (the second name is firmly entrenched in the installation) is a cylindrical mirror, four meters high. The idea of the "Ring" is to show the ramified network of urban space, the rhythm of the city, its internal organization and hierarchy. The combination of all these components is embodied in the optical effect: the installation completely changes the viewer's perception of the place.
In addition to influencing the viewer's consciousness, the installation has a bizarre effect on the surrounding space: numerous repetitions of mirror blocks on the inside and outside of the installation irrevocably change the usual urban context of Place Vendome, whose grandeur is repeatedly reflected in the mirrored surface of the structure.
Through the installation, Lapierre invites the audience to play a game with space. The game involves two levels: the first level is more related to the idea of changing urban areas. The edges of each cube reflect the surrounding space, re-creating a paradigm that destroys the established order. This stage is a kind of visual invasion. Its task is to change the perception of a place and help to look at it in a new way. At the second level of the game, a person is invited to go inside the cube and see his own reflection in numerous faces. Here, according to the author's idea, a person is, as it were, outside of time and space, completely divorced from the “external”. The second level, thus, gives a completely new, personal experience of relationships with space.
Another interesting artist, an American from Portland, Damien Gilley, loves games with space. His whimsical installations combine both sculptural elements and drawings. The influence of science fiction, non-Euclidean geometry and computer graphics creates a special visual space in which even a sophisticated viewer can hardly orientate.
