As soon as the snow melts and the streets get a little warmer, pensioners immediately take up benches at the entrances. Old people are bored at home, and it is hard to walk far, so they walk not far from the house in the fresh air. And so it was always, until the German artist Angie Hiesl did not come up with my unexpected art project called X-fois gens chaise, for which old people 60-70 years old had to leave their usual places at the entrance and move to simple white chairs … suspended from the facades of various buildings at a significant height. People of advanced age calmly sit on their metal white thrones, pretending that nothing unusual is happening. They knit or read measuredly, eat or sleep peacefully while sitting, write something, smoke, listen to the radio, - do their usual things, as if they were not in the city center, but at home, and were not sitting 5-6 meters above ground, and on a soft familiar sofa in the living room. They are representatives of a different generation. They are different. And in the art project of the German artist, this becomes more than understandable.
Angie Heathle designed and implemented the installation with old men suspended above the ground especially for the Montreal Art Festival. The elderly volunteers, whom the artist carefully selected for these roles, decorated the facades of various buildings in Montreal for several hours, from railway stations to shopping centers, from office buildings in the city center to residential high-rise buildings in residential areas. The installation was supposed to shock people, make them look at familiar things differently, from a different angle. And remember that the elderly, especially those who are already over 70, have little left, and they need our attention. So, hovering at a height of 6 meters above the ground, elderly people attract our attention.
Angie Heathle is known for the fact that her works always cause resonance and a lot of questions, many of which remain unanswered in the hope that the audience will find the right one. It is expected that this "exhibition of oldies" will be seen not only by residents of Montreal, but also by other cities in Europe, North and South America. How this performance looks live can be seen in the video:
