“The newspaper lives one day,” says a well-known aphorism, hinting at the main property of the media - efficiency. Without challenging this judgment, Belgian Ashley Noben turned the media into an object of mass culture by creating her own unprintable publication - the embroidered newspaper "Gobelin" ("De Gobelin").
Ashley Noben, 23, wrote her master's thesis on the credibility of news that appears on the Internet and in the motley press. The year spent behind piles of interesting newspapers was not in vain for the girl. Her fingers were soaked with ink so that she got into the blood, and the blood spurted into her head - and Ashley Noben dawned on her.
The idea behind the project was pretty simple and straightforward. Why not create an interesting newspaper, with real headlines gleaned from the media at hand, but not on plain paper, but on cotton? No sooner said than done. Ashley Noben had a lot of "schemes" for embroidery. As a result, the hand-made newspaper "Tapestry" turned out to be 18 pages.
Ashley Noben worked only on the titles and illustrations in detail. The text of the news itself is presented in the form of oblique dashes. These oblique sticks symbolize letters that do not even think of being divided into words. Just a continuous row of symbols - "a lot of beeches", which are extremely difficult to "master".
Ashley Noben shows a certain model by which the modern reader perceives the text: he pays attention to a bright picture, perceives and assimilates the heading and views the text diagonally, so the diagonal "letters" of the craftswoman are very appropriate here. Faceless cuneiform is a visual counterpart to blah blah.
Another thought inherent in the work of Ashley Noben: "Art is eternal - the life of a newspaper is short." What was news yesterday is history today, and tomorrow is forgotten. But we must not forget, the craftswoman thinks. Society lives on the principle of a careless student: it flies into one ear, flies out into the other. Therefore, it periodically tramples on the notorious rake, filling all the new bumps.
Art helps to draw people's attention to the general "forgetfulness". Newspaper embroidery is an art object, so, unlike the prototype, it certainly will not be sent to the trash bin or used for household needs such as cutting herring or washing windows.
In addition, the newspaper "Tapestry" is already a work of art, in which it is rather difficult to separate truth from fiction. Here, reliability is not at the forefront; artistic truth is more important. In the end, we returned to where Ashley Noben started - the question of whether the newspapers write the truth.
