There are still people in the world who take and print photographs not with digital cameras and on a digital printer, but in the old fashioned way, with film devices and using the classical method of printing - developers, fixers, etc. This, of course, is more difficult, but it brings great pleasure! Here comes the Vietnamese artist Binh Danh prints Photo in an even more complicated way! He prints them with chlorophyll on the leaves plants!
On our website, we told you about the art of creating paintings on sycamore leaves, as well as about leaf carving by the specialists of Longal Craft. So Binh Danh is doing something similar. But he makes it much more complicated, unusual and unique. After all, he does not carve drawings on the leaves of plants, he shows them on them!
To begin with, he takes the negative of a photograph. Then he places the negative on a living leaf of a living plant and waits for nature to do everything for him. After all, the color of a plant leaf depends on how much light fell on it, and, therefore, how much chlorophyll was produced in it. That is, a negative placed on a living sheet will generate a positive image on this sheet after a while.
The principle is the same as for printing photographs in the traditional way, but Binh Danh allows nature to do this, not chemical solutions. Of course, all this lasts incommensurably longer than in the case of manual printing and, even more so, than in the case of printing on a digital printer. But Danh's photographs are already works of art in themselves, regardless of what is depicted on them.
And he places scenes from the recent history of the Vietnamese people on the Binh Danh leaves. In these unusual natural photographs, you can see the moments of the Vietnam War: the bombing of cities and villages by American aircraft, human grief, the life stories of individuals in a difficult period for their country. This is not forgotten! Just as the unusual creative method of this Vietnamese artist is not forgotten!
