“A lot of people love the idea of wearing clothes that make them invisible,” says Dutch artist Desiree Palmen. And she's absolutely right. All of us, at least once in our life, dreamed of putting on clothes that would make us invisible. And everyone has their own reasons for that: they will hide from problems, retire and be alone with themselves, run away and hide from the whole world.
In our urban jungle, the artist from Rotterdam Desiree Palmen decided to create a chameleon man, resorting to a similar visual trick. And judging by the photographs, the result of her work is amazing. In a series of photographs that Desiree Palmen called "Camouflage", the costume is decorated in such a way that it seems that the person wearing it "disappears" against the background of the environment.
The work of the Dutch artist requires tremendous effort and attention to detail. She makes cotton suits and dyes camouflage by hand, diligently trying to achieve the effect of fusion with the environment. The model, who poses for several hours, trying to find the right angle, tilt and place, is also not sweet. Then this scene is photographed. It takes hours to draw a costume. First, Mrs. Palmen photographs the very place where the action will take place, then returns to the studio and carefully transfers the details to the cotton suit with acrylic paints. After all, a complete match of color, texture, light and shade must be achieved.
"People always react violently when they see my work," says Desiree. Their reactions vary, from confusion, surprise, to interest. The greatest delight from her work is experienced by children, who are always sincerely surprised and happy when they understand that in front of them is not a statue, but a disguised living person.
The artist showcases her work on the streets of Jerusalem, Rotterdam and Berlin and has had dozens of exhibitions across Europe, Desiree Palmen, who studied sculpture at the Maastricht Academy of Arts, sells her paintings for around £ 1,500.
