Every year on March 13, all of Thailand celebrates Elephant Day. The annual event is notable for its large scale and colorfulness. As for the idea, the holiday is another reason to remind the country's residents about the problem of the extinction of elephants. There are fewer than 5,000 elephants left in Thailand, according to statistics.
During the celebration of the Day of Elephants, animals are led in formation in the capital of Thailand, after which an impromptu buffet is laid for them. On the square are low tables heaped with vegetables and fruits. After the elephants are full, Buddhist monks begin to read prayers and bless the drivers. At the end of the prayer, animals and people are sprinkled with holy water as a sign that the next year will be no less successful than the previous one.
As a rule, the whole city comes to a grand event. Local residents bring bananas with them, tourists are in a hurry to film what is happening on camera. Elephant Day is also called the day of the animal census. Indeed, by the scale of the elephant parade, one can determine how many animals the country missed in a year. No less colorful festival with the self-explanatory name "Citron" is held annually in France. On it, the French construct colorful sculptures of oranges and lemons to celebrate the citrus harvest.
