Knitted can be a sweater, socks, scarf, mittens and some other items of clothing or interior design. But an American artist of Polish descent Agata Olek looks at this traditional type of folk crafts much more broadly. An example of this - knitted room, exhibited at London's Tony Art Gallery.
Agata Olek has repeatedly proved to the world that the art of crocheting is not limited only to clothes, that with its help you can create truly large-scale works - street, gallery, advertising. So in her next installation, she showed a new look at knitting and its result.
This installation is a knitted room called “I do not expect to be a mother, but I do expect to die alone.” In this installation, she shows the audience her life, their hopes, experiences, everyday moments and even personal correspondence. And all this by means of crocheted elements.
Among the elements of the installation “I do not expect to be a mother, but I do expect to die alone” you can see interior items, furniture, wallpaper, paintings, toys, dishes and other things, each of which is personally connected by Agata Olek.
In the installation, you can see a lot of text, also knitted. These are favorite quotes, read by Agata Olek in various sources, her thoughts, all kinds of instructions and even the author's personal correspondence - her emails and SMS-ki.
Agata Olek herself claims that the thoughtful viewer will see in the installation "I do not expect to be a mother, but I do expect to die alone" the experience that she gained when she first moved from Poland to New York and then from New York in London.
Agatha Olek's installation "I do not expect to be a mother, but I do expect to die alone" will be on display at the Tony Gallery in London until 23 March 2012.
