Until recently knitting was just one of the folk crafts, which few people took seriously. However, thanks to the work of the Polish-American artist Olek, this idea has changed a lot. It turns out that even the most complex and profound ideas can be revealed with the help of yarn. Including questions gender equality … A personal exhibition dedicated to the latter Olek with the title The end is far.
Polish-born and practicing in the United States of America, artist Agata Olek (known by the creative name Olek) is perhaps the most famous yarn master in the world. After all, it was she who showed the whole planet that knitting can be considered not only a grandmother's occupation, but also go on a par with other genres of contemporary art - conceptual and extraordinary.
With hand-knitted artwork, Olek protests against slavery, explores the symbiosis of Brazilian, African and American cultures, and highlights the power that women have in modern society.
A series of works by Olek, presented in her new solo exhibition The End is Far, was created by the author during many months of house arrest, to which Agatha was subjected to a fight with a man who insulted her in a bar in the UK.
Having a lot of free time, Olek spent it on understanding the place of a woman in society, her strength, freedom and justice in relation to her. The artist illustrated these thoughts by means of knitted works that formed the backbone of The End is Far exhibition.
And for maximum clarity, when illustrating her philosophical reasoning, Olek used rather unusual and ambiguous constructions as a frame for knitted works - a skeleton, a skull, a bottle of champagne, boxing gloves and even a weapon.
