The art of disguise, if we talk about it in relation to people, is very valuable in wartime. In a peaceful life, it is practically not in demand, except that women of fashion periodically try on elements of camouflage uniforms. The situation was corrected by two German students Sabina Keric and Yvonne Bayer, who decided to experiment with camouflage in the most ordinary supermarket.
The idea of the performance called "Urban camouflage" was born from the authors in 2007. To implement it, it took not so much: to design a number of costumes that would allow the actors to merge with the assortment of the supermarket. Cardboard boxes, notebooks, paper bags, plastic bottles were used … People dressed in this way, depending on the situation, could both “dissolve” in the trading floor and “come to life” at the most unexpected moment.
When everything was ready, all that remained was to film the reaction of customers and store employees with a video camera. The reaction, by the way, was very different: from laughter to outright aggression. And some customers just took the goods and walked by, not even noticing the camouflaged characters. “But most people, as they say, didn’t blink an eye when a bunch of boxes or gloves suddenly came to life and started walking,” the organizers of the project are surprised.
Why was the supermarket chosen as the venue? Here is what the authors of the performance say about this: “The retail space is a clean and untouched area. Usually there is no artistic expression here. And, accordingly, buyers do not expect anything out of the ordinary in the world of goods and price tags. We crossed this line and entered the world of trade without any permission."
