Video: Religion and Art: Pictures of Churches by Dirk Wiedlei

German photographer Dirk Wiedlei created a series of photographs dedicated to religion, but the main thing for the photographer was not the moral side of the issue, but the architectural one: the master aimed his lens at many different cathedrals around the world. The pictures turned out to be quite symmetrical, full of laconicism and restrained neutral tones, which fully reflects the spirit of asceticism so characteristic of many religions.
These works will certainly interest people who are fond of the culture, history and art of the Renaissance of other countries, because most of the cathedrals were built during this period and in the photographs you can perfectly see all the features of architecture.
Personally, it seems to me that the pictures still turned out to be rather "empty" and "stereotyped", using such works you can study the architecture of cathedrals, but not get imbued with a religious feeling, although of course, the ceilings and stained-glass windows in many pictures are simply amazing. Unfortunately, for some reason the photographer did not take pictures of Orthodox cathedrals and Muslim mosques, although they, of course, are in no way inferior to pickaxes (and this is how European churches were called in Russia as early as the middle of the 18th century!) Of Europe.
There is no information on the Internet about the religious beliefs of Dirk Wiedlei himself, but perhaps such a restrained and laconic style is due to the fact that the photographer's main activity is advertising, where, in the age of iron, glass and concrete, restraint is one of the "strongholds" of style.
Perhaps the author did not fully realize that religion in general does not need advertising, or perhaps it was just his sense of creative self-identification that made itself felt, and the photographer did not want to look at the cathedrals from a slightly different angle, but the output turned out to be quite high-quality. but, alas, faceless pictures. Although, of course, everyone has their own tastes and preferences. In any case, the photographs by Dirk Wiedlei give us an excellent opportunity to enjoy the architecture of European cathedrals.
