Belgium is a beautiful European country with rich architecture, no less rich history and one very interesting tradition. Every two years in August, a bright huge carpet appears on the Grand Place, the central square of Belgium. Hundreds of people are working on its creation, thousands of tourists come to see it, and all because it is made of beautiful and unusual material - fresh flowers.
The first floral carpet in Belgium was created in 1971 by landscape designer Etienne Stautemans. The idea turned out to be quite successful, that the author had to make another carpet, then another … After a while Stoutemans became a real expert in the field of creating excellent floral carpets.
The fame of the designer spread all over the world, they wanted to see carpets made of flowers not only in Belgium, but also in France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and other countries. However, despite all his numerous works in different parts of the world, Stautemans himself says that the most beautiful and delightful are Belgian carpets created at the Grand Place and surrounded by the unique atmosphere of the old city.
The main material from which carpets are made are begonias. First, it is Etienne Stoutemans' favorite flower. Secondly, begonias are really perfect for this kind of business. These flowers are resistant to bad weather and strong sun, and therefore provide freshness to the carpet for several days. And, finally, thirdly, the color of begonias is very diverse - from bright colors to pastel shades, and this allows you to bring to life the most daring design ideas.
It takes about 700 thousand colors and about four hours of work to create a magnificent carpet, which is preceded by many months of development and appearance approval. But the carpet does not “live” for long - the flowers wither, and no enthusiasm of the audience can stop this process. The show usually lasts three days. To get to Brussels at this time is considered a special success.
The Flower Festival even has its own website where you can see all the carpets made at the Grand Place since 1976.
