Nowadays, many authors, with the help of their creativity, are trying to draw people's attention to global problems of our time, in particular, to the problem of melting glaciers. Katie Paterson also did not stand aside, however, she contributed to saving the planet in a very unusual way. She does not show anything to the viewer and does not say anything: she simply offers to listen … how the ice melts.

To create her installation, Kati Paterson traveled to Iceland, where she recorded on film the sounds of melting of three separate glaciers - Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull, Solheimajökull. In addition to these recordings, she also took home a certain amount of melt water. The water was subsequently re-frozen in the form of vinyl records, and the very sounds of melting were "recorded" on them. The installation itself is a play of these ice plates that slowly melt on their own. After a couple of hours, only puddles of water remain from them.

True, viewers see this process not live, but on monitors: after all, the records themselves were played only once and melted long ago, and this record is the only proof of their existence. It is difficult not to see the parallels here between Katya Paterson's ice sheets and glaciers in general: after some time, we will know about the existence of certain glaciers only thanks to their photographs and videos.

“Iceland's lagoons are a graveyard of glaciers,” says Katy Patterson. - There is something heartbreaking in the knowledge that you hear the sounds of the death of something majestic. But on the other hand, this is wonderful, because this is a triumph of nature. You can hear recordings of melting glaciers here.
