Of course, it cannot be said that the print press is living out its last days. However, hardly anyone will undertake to dispute the fact that newspapers and magazines are gradually being replaced by electronic media. Against this background, Nick Georgiou found a way to breathe new life into old newspapers: he makes strange sculptures out of them, which can be seen not only in his studio, but also on the streets of the city.
“Books, newspapers and other print media are becoming artifacts in the 21st century,” says Nick Giorgiu. “Every second more and more people are abandoning traditional reading methods in favor of a computer. The truth is that everything that we used to read from paper can now be read on a monitor. The way we interact with text has changed. But one should not think that the author's work is a protest against the situation described above. No, as any modern man Nick understands that progress is inevitable. The author sees his task in something else: “My work is devoted not only to reducing the role of the printed word in the modern world. but also its revival as art. Regenerating the printed word into another form - a book or newspaper becomes a sculpture - is a way to breathe new life into it. Renaissance is what is most important in my work”.
Nick Giorgiu often takes his sculptures outside and leaves them on the sidewalks. According to the author, it sometimes seems to him that the actions of pedestrians are programmed, and he really wants to bring an element of surprise into their planned life. Yes, not every day, rushing to work or university, you meet such strange paper creatures. Nick is usually somewhere nearby and captures the reaction of people to his sculptures.
Nick Giorgiu was born in New York in 1980. His father is a Cypriot who was forced to emigrate to the United States due to the Turkish occupation of Cyprus; mother is Greek. You can see more of the author's work on his website myhumancomputer.com
