Old newspapers can be used not only as recyclable materials for making cardboard and other recycled paper products. They are quite suitable for creative experiments, for example, when working on papier-mâché. Here comes the artist Will Kurtz makes figures from obsolete newspapers. True, he has his own, very peculiar idea of how to do it!
The art of papier-mâché is to create a moist, pliable mass out of old newspapers, from which you can mold anything - after drying, it will solidify in the shape given to it. The resulting blank can be colored, turning it into a real work of art. As vivid examples of this, one can cite papier-mâché dolls from Roman Shustrov, the infantile creativity of the Grrl + Dog community, or the distorting mirror of politics at a carnival in Germany.
But there are artists who are trying to find something new even in this now classical art form. One of them is the American Will Kurtz. His work is currently on display at the Mike Weiss Gallery in New York.
Will Kurtz's works are also made from wet old newspapers, which have been shaped into the desired shapes of people and animals. But, unlike the classic papier-mâché, they are extremely realistic and natural.
For example, in these life-size figures, you can see bags under the eyes, double chins, worn out clothes, excess weight and other imperfections. Moreover, Kurtz basically does not use paint when creating these works - only natural colors and texts that were in the original newspapers.
Moreover, Will Kurtz deliberately portrays people who find themselves on the periphery of modern life - beggars, old, homeless, sick. Thus, he emphasizes the attitude of society towards them, which, in fact, threw out these living beings, like throwing out old newspapers and magazines.
