Since the time when people have tasted all the delights of country life in mansions, in a Western manner, landscape design masters and land art specialists have become their good friends for a long time, helping to arrange a decorative lawn in front of the house as original as possible and bring them to order a backyard garden. In the west, the art of landscape design has stepped far ahead, and the gardens created by such eminent masters as the British architect Charles Jencks, can rightfully be considered real masterpieces of modern art, worthy of decorating the territory of a royal estate. Landscape designer, architectural critic and practicing architect Charles Jenks has been called one of the best contemporary specialists, and his work has repeatedly won first places and won prestigious awards in international architectural competitions and festivals. At one time he received a Master of Arts degree at Harvard, defended his dissertation in the history of architecture at the University College of the British capital, became the author of an extensive monograph entitled "The Language of Postmodern Architecture", but his achievements in the field of landscape design and land art in the whole. One of the most outstanding projects in this direction is considered Garden of Cosmic Speculation ("Garden of Cosmic Reflections"), created by the author in Scotland, near the small town of Dumfries. According to the author's idea, this garden represents our universe in miniature.
A key element of the amazing garden-universe is a huge 25-flight staircase that marks important milestones in space history. Starting at the top flight, which symbolizes the present day, visitors walk through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution. Finally, at the very bottom, the steps are hidden under dark water - which means the secret of the origin of the universe. The same philosophical and thoughtful are other art projects of Charles Jenks, in which he skillfully combines natural relief with artificial, and natural processes with scientific.
One of the designer's most recent projects is a garden called Northumberlandia (Northern Goddess) located in the north of England. Commissioned by the British Coal Company, Jenks created a giant sculpture of the earth goddess, which is 112 feet high and 1300 feet long. The author plans to complete this project in 2013, and then the Northern Goddess will become the largest human figure in the world ever used in landscape design.
