Apparently, contemporary artists decided that everyone can create an ordinary picture, painted with paints or drawn with a pencil, and with this thought they began to compete with each other in mastering new materials for "drawing". We have already written about portraits from pushpins or, for example, cups of coffee. This time before you is another such original. Meet Scott Blake, who uses barcodes to create celebrity portraits!
The artist began working on the first portrait from barcodes back in 1998. According to Scott, he was inspired by the general worries about a computer crash in 2000 and the associated fear of a digital apocalypse. Since then, he has managed to create 30 images of celebrities - from Andy Warhol to Arnold Schwarzenegger. For his work, the author uses real-life barcodes, and tries to make them directly related to the person being portrayed. For example, a portrait of Elvis Presley consists of barcodes from his music CDs.
The process of creating one portrait takes from two to six months. It starts with the process of finding celebrity items and barcodes on them, and ends with image processing in Photoshop. Blake tries to use a new technique every time and find new ways to compose an image from barcodes.
According to Blake, the barcode is a kind of proprietary stigma that each member of the "capitalist gang" uses to mark his property. But by skillfully combining the barcode and art, the artist achieves the transformation of this sign into something more. For example, in his work "A Barcode for Christ", this symbol of the consumer society takes on a religious connotation: in this way Scott Blake tries to show the reverence for technology in modern cultural life.
The largest image of Scott Blake is a 2560 barcode portrait of Bruce Lee. And my favorite is Elvis Presley.
