Driving along the motorways, you may have seen damaged or poorly maintained road signs. What would you do with them? Renovated? Sent for scrap? In the American state of Pennsylvania, they approached this issue creatively - and along the highway a long multi-colored fence appeared, made just from the old road signs.
The idea for the project, titled “Read Between the Signs”, originated in 2002 and was brought to life by Amara Geffen, artist and initiative director of Arts & Environment. A fence made of old signs appeared near the entrance to the Pennsylvania city of Meadville and is now 365 meters long. To date, because the Read Between the Signs project is long-term, which means that work on it will still be carried out in the future.
The fence itself is a sculptural installation depicting landscapes and American nature, farms, and even Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers as people directly involved in installing road signs. In addition, Amara Geffen has decorated this piece with kinetic elements driven by wind or solar energy.
The project "Read Between the Signs" has pleased residents of the city and passing travelers, and has already become one of the attractions of Meadville. Organizations providing ongoing support to the project include the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Allegheny College and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Fence illusions. Unusual graffiti from Zebrating-Art studio
The streets of the German city of Mannheim are decorated with amazing drawings. Yes, this is graffiti, but special, original. Firstly, the authors cover with drawings not concrete walls and fences, but lattice fences, railings and gates. And secondly, the pictures can only be viewed from the right angle from the right side. The authors of the unusual graffiti are a studio called Zebrating-Art
Mesh-netting: one step from a summer cottage fence to a work of art
It seems that wire mesh is such a mundane thing that it is simply impossible to use it as a basis for a work of art. But lately the authors seem to have agreed: the weirder and inappropriate the material, the more eagerly they try to turn it into something beautiful and amazing. Ivan Lovatt proves with his work that not only fences for garden plots can be made from a chain-link mesh, but also very talented sculptures
Graffiti from colored cups on a mesh fence. Art project of the Multistab studio
Estonian design duo Multistab has taken a completely new approach to creating street art, in particular, street art on fences, but without the use of appliqués and paint cans. The guys "master" exclusively mesh metal fences, and decorate them with pictures made exclusively from … multi-colored plastic cups. The result is something that resembles a mosaic, where each cup is a pixel, only large and on the fence
Artist Olga Romanova. "Read Art" is a contemporary painting that can be read
Anything that doesn't kill us makes us stronger. 2011 was a turning point in my life, a year of unpleasant discoveries and disappointments. I took a fresh look at this world and the people living in it. My emotions found a way out in the art project "Read Art" I created. In principle, it was thanks to the experience that "Read Art" was born
