In the city of San Francisco, which is located in the US state of California, there is a school on the walls of which there are frescoes by the artist Viktor Arnautov, who lived from 1896 to 1979. The Congress of Russian Americans decided to take part in the collection of signatures that should protect these frescoes from destruction.
We are also talking about Arnautov's frescoes, which he created on the walls of this school in 1936. There are 13 such frescoes in total. On these works, the artist captured moments from the life of the famous American leader George Washington. He chose him for a reason, but because the local school is named after this famous American, who became the first president of the United States of America. In one of these murals, you can see Washington with dark-skinned slaves that belonged to him. Another of the frescoes depicts the famous American president next to a murdered Indian.
For many years, Arnautov's frescoes have adorned the walls of a school in San Francisco. And so the education committee of this city in June decided that they must be destroyed. According to them, these works of the artist, who was born in the Russian Empire and who lived for several decades in the United States of America, are offensive to both Indians and African Americans. This committee decided to remove the works from public viewing. We didn’t find anything better than painting all 13 frescoes within 12 months. Even calculations have already been carried out, which showed that approximately 600 thousand dollars would have to be spent on such work.
Natalya Sabelnik spoke with representatives of Russian news outlets on this issue, who holds the position of deputy chairman of the Coordinating Council of Organizations of Russian Compatriots in the United States, and is also a member of the World Coordinating Council and President of the Congress of Russian Americans.
Natalya Sabelnik in adolescence studied at this school for several years and repeatedly saw Arnautov's frescoes. She herself does not see anything offensive in these works of art, and no one previously considered these works to be offensive to anyone. Natalia is a member of the San Francisco High School Alumni Association and actively opposes painting over murals. She says that it is impossible to destroy objects of art, especially considering that they truthfully tell about the past. It cannot be erased from history that Washington had slaves, everyone should remember the past, only then it will not happen again in the future.
