… Not seeing the sun and planets, Not knowing what is happening in the world, One as a finger, in an empty apartment, the Artist of the Mass writes Light …
The artist is an uncle, like everyone else, But he is tempted in the Invisible Battle, In him self-propelled prayer Runs away like a squirrel in a wheel.
He writes at night, writes during the day, He writes with tempera and chalk, He writes White on White - And God's light streams in him!
Dawn envelops the house with Its crimson porphyry, the Artist of the Masses for kefir Coming to the neighboring "Gastronome".
And again in a hurry to return to the cage, Which is wider than the sky and the universe, So that the Pre-World Light, the Imperishable Light On the despicable canvas to support!
…. Fifteen years ago, I cried early before dawn And kept repeating, as an excuse: "The artist of the Mass is painting Light."

Valentin Pavlovich Massov, a native of the Ulyanovsk region, was born into the family of a doctor. Left without parents early, he was brought up in an orphanage.
Childhood.- I was four years old when my older brother bought colored pencils. I took these pencils and said, "I won't give it up." And a person dear to me, my mother's sister, she was a prayer book, said: "Don't touch him, he will be an artist." When I was seven years old, I saw her pray. She was on her knees in front of the icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands, and blue air rose from her. He filled the whole room and was very handsome. I remember how she told me: “Your life will not be easy. And when the going gets tough, read my prayer. " I was raised on her prayers. This has always helped me. At the age of 12, I read Pushkin. Shocked, I left alone in the field, lay down on the ground and cried. Shed tears and asked: “Lord, if he is not there, there is no point in my life either. Take my life, but bring him back. " For a long time I believed that it was possible Pushkin penetrated deeply into me. Youth. After completing the seven-year period, Valentin Massov left for Penza in 1953, where he entered the Penza Art School named after V. I. Savitsky. - Even when I was studying, Velasquez became my favorite artist. There is nothing higher than this in general on earth. This is a mystery. In 1955 I had a meeting with Academician Arkady Plastov. After looking at my works, he said: “God gave you a precious eye. Work the way God wants you to and don't listen to anyone. There are a lot of hooligans in art now. " Further creative development took place through a meeting with A. Plastov. Becoming as an artist.- In the beginning it was unconscious, but the more you love, the more you learn and the more you learn, the more you love. This is development. In 1962, there was a meeting with a very interesting art critic (unfortunately, I do not remember her name). I painted her portrait, she, having looked at my works, said: “You are very talented, but you have everything based on feelings. And when the feelings are over, what will you do? " And I answered her: “God grant that all artists' hands dry up when they run out of feelings. Then there would be no bad pictures.”In the fall of 1962, there was a creative trip to the Kuban. The need for this trip was after the exhibition of Renato Guttuso. At Renato Guttuso's exhibition, I realized the words of A. Plastov: “Work the way God puts you in your heart and don't listen to anyone”. And, in the Kuban, new nature, new conditions, beautiful autumn, opened up new opportunities for me.

I worked in this state for 2 years, 1962-1963. But, when I was officially declared an abstractionist and formalist, remembering the words of Plastov and realizing my giftedness, so as not to irritate the authorities, I picked up watercolor - a soft, harmless material. I worked very hard. In 1970 there was a trip to Kyrgyzstan. From this year, a very serious attitude towards watercolors began.

In 1972 in Ferapontovo, professor of painting Alexander Vasilyevich Myzin said: “Your souls are related to Dionysius. You will give a new impetus to art. Words by A. Plastov and A. Myzina was always with me.

In 1975, on the recommendations of the wonderful artist Vitaly Nikolaevich Goryaev and the academician of art history Mikhail Vladimirovich Alpatov, I was accepted into the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1977 I was in Moscow. There were a lot of people who were very good at my work. They made a meeting with the artist Oleg Tselkov. For them, Oleg Tselkov was an authority and Oleg's opinion was very important for them. When Oleg looked at my works, he said: "You are doing what no one has done everything that art has left on earth."

1979 is the year of revelation.- The significance of Oleg Tselkov's words became clear only after 1979, the year of my revelation.

P. S. We talk a lot about the spiritual, or rather, about the loss of spirituality in modern life. If the words are not supported by deeds, what is the meaning of these words. For me, this is just a game of demagoguery, which means a waste of time. A person who gave his life to comprehend the highest secrets in creativity and managed to translate his discoveries into real works, finds himself on the periphery of the so-called "art" - the pitiful attempts of mediocre businessmen who have reduced the high to the level of street caricature. The country has no future without Culture. If you want to live in a new, more perfect world, you need to change the existing order in the art business. You need to look for and promote really talented artists, and not make politics out of art. Valentin Massov is an artist of the 21st century. His work is able to give a new reading of the meaning of creative development for gifted people. By blocking the paths to the viewers of the works of this master, first of all, you block the path of development for yourself and your children. So who is losing more? He, who has already created and achieved, or you, who do not have the opportunity to see and comprehend other possibilities in creativity?

Magical paintings by Lithuanian artist Petras Lukosius who paints light
There are artists who, in their work, try to embrace all genres, fully express themselves in them, others work in one direction, at the same time they are diverse and multifaceted. And there are those, like virtuoso musicians playing on one string, who choose one theme, one image and reveal it to its full breadth and depth.
