The fertile land of the Palouse agricultural region in the northwestern United States is a natural wonder. Lush meadows are reminiscent of a rippling sea or the streaks of pastel colors of a talented artist. The palette of the artist-nature this time turned out to be the green of the hills and dunes, as well as the rich dark color of the fertile soil. Palouse - a real paradise for photographers, but until now this area remains practically unknown.
Palouse farmland spans southeastern Washington, north-central Idaho, and even extends south and northeastern Oregon. Palouse is located south of Spokane, with an area of about 3000 sq. miles, wheat and legumes are grown here.
The peculiar picturesque mud dunes of Palouse were formed thousands of years ago during the Ice Age. On the territory of modern Palouse, numerous hills have formed, which represent a chaotic alternation of hills and depressions. The steepest slopes can be at a 50% incline in relation to the slope, and the minimum range of heights is from 5 to 130 cm in depth.
Unlike other prairies in North America, Palouse is a naturally formed part of the ecosystem: they did not burn the land here and did not massively graze livestock. The vastness of the Palouse originally had endless meadows, but with the arrival of European settlers in this area in the 19th century, intensive agriculture began to flourish. The consumer attitude of the farmers has led to the fact that today there are practically no local plants left on Palouse, most of the prairies today are reserved for farm fields, in addition, small towns have appeared here.
Unfortunately, human activities have once again jeopardized the existence of the picturesque prairies of Palouse. All that still reminds of the former endless beauty are unique plants that crawl lonely along the paved roads and railway tracks, on the outskirts of plowed fields and equipped pastures, along surviving streams and in open areas of pine forests that have not been cut down by a miracle.
