Makarova, after graduation she entered the troupe of the Theater-Studio of the film actor. Gerasimov invited her to one of the roles in his painting "Young Guard". Yumatov became an actor by a fluke: in the buffet of the Film Actor Theater, director Grigory Alexandrov drew attention to a textured sailor who had recently returned from the front and invited him to shoot his film Spring. He also brought him to VGIK to Gerasimov, but after auditioning, he said that Yumatov was so talented that he did not need additional training, and he was immediately accepted into the Theater of Film Actor.

Almost the entire course of Gerasimov was involved in "Young Guard", for Yumatov this film became a kind of starting point. During the filming, several acting weddings were played at once, including the wedding of Yumatov and Krepkogorskaya. Their marriage was strong, but they had to go through many trials. The muse was little interested in the economy and household chores and was waiting for the main roles. For fear of missing her chance in the cinema, Krepkogorskaya had several abortions, which made it impossible for her to have children. Yumatov closed his eyes to the helplessness of his wife in everyday life, and to her whims, and even to fleeting novels.

Because of this, Yumatov lost the role of the Red Army soldier Sukhov in the film "White Sun of the Desert", although it was already approved.

He invited the janitor who helped bury his dog to his home. They drank, but it was not possible to find out what exactly caused the quarrel. According to the official version, the janitor said that it would have been better for the Germans to win the war, and rushed at Yumatov with a knife, and he fired a gun in self-defense. But family friends do not believe that the actor could kill a person. Many then said that in fact he took the blame of his wife. However, this version was not confirmed at the trial.
