The Wilder Mann photo project contains ritual costumes of modern pagans from different parts of Europe. Thus, the author of the project shows the collective image of the main character - a savage dormant in every civilized person.
Over the course of two years, French photographer Charles Fréger has traveled to 19 European countries collecting photographs for his Wilder Mann project. Depicting the cult figure of a "wild man", the photographer tried to convey the spirit of the so-called "pagan Europe", thereby reminding contemporaries of the worldview of ancient people, and also vividly emphasizing the contrast between modern civilization and pristine wildlife.
During his travels, he was able to capture many pagan rituals, the bulk of which are associated with seasonal natural phenomena - the winter solstice and the spring renewal. In fact, he managed to conduct a study that clearly demonstrates how the "wild man" is portrayed in various ancient and modern cultures - from a humanoid creature covered with flowers and grass, to a monster with the characteristic features of all kinds of animals and birds.
Since the Neolithic era, people began to use costumes for rituals that imitate both real animals and fictional monsters. The image of the beast-man or bird-man was present in the ancient culture of many peoples of our planet. One can mention Perm animal style, created by the early medieval civilization of the Urals during the VI-XII centuries A. D. or no less interesting medieval shaman cults other Siberian peoples. As a rule, in all ancient cultures, the mythological figure of a "wild man" personified the complex relationship between people and nature, the change of time and life cycles.
