When studying any foreign language, questions invariably arise about those letters that are written, but not read. There are different numbers of them in different languages. With this Silent letters and is dedicated to a typographic project with the title Silencby a group of Danish artists and designers.
On the site Kulturologia. Ru we have already talked about the work of Benjamin Lacombe, who creates three-dimensional books. Today we will talk about another typographic experiment devoted to the "quiet" letters of different languages.
Almost all languages of the Western World are characterized by discrepancies in the spelling of words and their pronunciation. Each of them has a noticeable number of letters that are written, but not read or read, but in a completely different way. Books from the Silenc series, created by Danish designers from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID), tell us about this very clearly.
These guys published a series of books in different languages, each of which contains several stories and stories by Hans Christian Andersen, such as "The Little Mermaid", "Ole Lukkoye", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier".
If you open one of these books, you will find that almost every word in it has letters printed in red. There are even whole red words and paragraphs. And this printed product comes with a special filter of the corresponding color, which can be attached to the page. In this case, the reader will not be able to see part of the text at all. Moreover, this is exactly the percentage of it, which is made up of "quiet" letters in one language or another.
In English it is 16 percent, in Danish - 32, in French - 28. Many linguists who study these languages have long been talking about the need to change spelling in order to bring it as close as possible to pronunciation. And the Silenc project from the designers and CIID is a very clear demonstration that such changes are really needed!
