Video: From a father with love: photographs of an autistic son by Timothy Archibald

According to statistics, one in 88 children in the world suffers from autism, and such disorders are more common in boys than in girls. Timothy Archibald, a photographer from San Francisco, faced a similar misfortune himself: his son Elijah was diagnosed by doctors. To find mutual understanding with the child, the loving father decided to record how his five-year-old boy interacts with the world around him. The photocycle was named "Echolilia".
The photo project has become a kind of study of how five-year-old Elijah looks at the world, what attracts him, and what surprises or frightens him. It is amazing how harmoniously the child perceives the surrounding objects. Of course, the isolation, characteristic of children with autism, their non-socialization - all this is clearly visible in the photographs.
Timofey Archibald admits that he never convinced his son that he was absolutely healthy. On the contrary, he seeks to show the boy how he differs from other people, to present his uniqueness in a special, attractive light. Perhaps this is correct, because history knows many cases when people with autism turned out to be very talented (suffice it to recall the Briton Stephen Wiltshire, an artist with a phenomenal memory, about whom we have already told the readers of the site Culturology. Ru).
As a professional photographer, Timofey Archibald managed to build his communication with his son in this project in such a way that the boy could fully reveal his desires, realize his desire to control the situation, and the father himself learned to “follow his son”. Both father and son liked a series of ready-made photographs, because now, reviewing these frames, they can remember those pleasant moments that they spent together.
