Lake Michigan (USA) is known as one of the largest and most picturesque lakes in the world. One of its attractions is lighthousesthat turn into real architectural masterpieces in winter. Harsh winds and low temperatures "transform" them: hung with "clusters" of icicles, lighthouses resemble giant marble sculptures.
The beauty of winter coastal landscapes captured photographer Tom Gill, it took the nature lover several years to collect an impressive collection of photographs. Gill's "Pet" is a 35-foot lighthouse of St. Joseph, built back in 1844. During winter storms, when the temperature reaches 20 degrees below zero, and waves 6 m high crash into the pier, the tower is "overgrown" with a thick layer of ice. To get to the lighthouse in such weather, Tom Gill has to overcome a difficult and dangerous path, but the result justifies all the efforts spent.
The destinies of lighthouses, like those of people, are unique. The flagships of Lake Michigan suffer from icing every year, but their "colleague" from Denmark, the Rubjerg Knud lighthouse, perishes under the power of the hot sands, year after year going deeper and deeper into the ground (which we have already told the readers of the site Kulturologiya.ru about).
Of course, amazing lighthouses must be protected, because their lofty mission - to show the right way to ships, saving them in storms and bad weather - is worthy of respect.

When and how the lighthouses appeared, and how the Statue of Liberty is related to them
Judging by the works of literature and cinema, they are built mainly in order to have a place to play out monstrous dramas and chilling encounters with the supernatural. Not that it was not true - all kinds of things happened at the lighthouses. And they themselves took different guises: beacons-towers, beacons-ships, beacons-churches; and the statue on Liberty Island is holding a torch raised up in its hand for a reason

A dozen amazing lighthouses, each of which can be considered a new wonder of the world
As you know, in addition to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Egyptian pyramids, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Mausoleum, the Temple of Artemis and the statue of Zeus, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was also among the seven wonders of the world. This lighthouse, which reached 120 meters in height and shone in the ancient flotilla, collapsed in the XIV century. Since then, architects from all over the world have built many lighthouses, but most of them do not deserve the title of "wonder of the world." But these twelve are definitely worthy
