Geisha - girls who entertain clients with dancing, singing and skillful conversation are a real phenomenon of Japanese culture, which has haunted Europeans for many centuries. Someone admires their piquant beauty, someone mistakenly confuses them with girls of easy virtue. However, few people know that the first geisha were not women, but … men, actors and musicians of the Kabuki theater. By the way, you can still find male geisha in Japan today. One of them is a 26-year-old boy Eitaro, he chose such an extraordinary profession to continue his mother's work.
Eitaro's mother died three years ago of cancer, and since then he and his sister have continued the "family business", because they have six more geishas. The guy from childhood showed interest in art: from the age of 8 he was engaged in dancing, and once, when he was 10 years old, at one of the parties he tried himself as a performer of female dances. At the age of 11, he was already performing at the Japanese National Theater.
Eitaro was a very talented dancer, his mother did not interfere with his son's hobbies. By the way, she made a lot of efforts to revive the tradition of "geisha houses". The last such establishment was closed in the 1980s. After the death of their mother, Eitaro and his sister Maika did not even doubt that they would continue their mother's work: the "house of geisha", which they took over, is located in the Tokyo port area of Omori.
In Japan, there are other men who participate in geisha performances: they play along with girls on drums or sing along. Eitaro is the only one among the stronger sex who wears a female kimono and performs all the ceremonies that a geisha is supposed to carry out. Perhaps this was the reason for his popularity; today he is a frequent guest not only at private parties, but also at public gatherings.
Unfortunately, the culture of geisha today is practically "dying out", a century ago there were about 80,000 of them, today only 1000 representatives of this profession entertain men.
By the way, geisha are a favorite image among artists keen on the culture of Japan. On our website Kulturologiya.ru we have already written about the work of the young Italian artist Zoe Lacchei. Her extraordinary project Geisha Project is dedicated to the image of beautiful Japanese women, adorned with animals and bones.
