In the bustle of the city, many secretly dream of being on a desert island away from the problems and dizzying rhythm of life. French photographer Antoine Bruy is one of those who temporarily decided to abandon the benefits of civilization in order to feel life as it is. For the past three years, he has been hitchhiking around Europe and meeting people who can be called hermits. Photocycle "Scrublands" tells about daredevils who have traded comfort and coziness for freedom.
Antoine Bray embarked on his journey in 2010 with no clear idea of what his route would be. Over the years, he visited many remote mountainous areas where, oddly enough, people live. Antoine photographed modest dwellings built from scrap materials. Staying as a guest, he got to know the owners and, of course, took an active part in arranging their life.
Antoine had a chance to meet different people, among the "hermits" were former teachers, students, engineers. All of them today are engaged in subsistence farming, their main concerns are focused on equipping their home, taking care of livestock, and growing a vegetable garden. This way of life turned out to be completely self-sufficient, because these people have a clear goal and real difficulties that they have learned to overcome over the years.
Wildlife and ascetic lifestyle are captured very expressively by the photographer. Antoine Bray enthusiastically tells that during the work on his project he learned many life stories, each of which is unique. The phenomenon of "hermitism" in the 21st century is unique, if only in that the men and women whom the author happened to meet, managed to escape from society, leave it behind and enjoy their own lives. Undoubtedly, this documentary project is akin to a modernized fairy tale telling about an idyllic world of harmony and harmony. Antoine Bray himself admits that in this way he tried to "bring a little magic into our modern civilization."
