A typical school day begins with the youngest of ten children having to leave home. If they do not go for a walk, you can forget about the elders' studies. Grandfather and grandmother take the three younger ones and go for a walk.
The mother of the family, Anastasia Neufeld, says: “The first week was very hard and tiring. I had to try very hard. It was so difficult! Later we got used to it so much that for us it became an ordinary daily life."
Five schoolchildren under one roof
The role of the school class was assigned to a large canteen. Anastasia clears the table, and in no time the kitchen turns into a room for an elementary school. Three older children take places in front of the computer, lay out school supplies. Children are ready to learn!
Three junior schoolchildren study in the cafeteria, three high school students are on the first floor, and three more are on the second. This is what everyday school life looks like now under the roof of the Neufelds. Anastasia is sure that everything is possible quite simply to organize, if everyone adheres to a strict schedule.

For several weeks, Anastasia Neufeld was not only a mother, but also a teacher and headmaster in one person. According to Anastasia's 11-year-old daughter, Ruth, homework is much more exhausting than school. “But if I need help, I can always go to my mother, and she will definitely help me,” the girl said.
Technical problems
Online lessons for the elders, videoconferences for the little ones … The mother of the family discovered a completely new role for herself. Being a banker by training, she had to become a computer specialist. A large family had to modernize its technical base. “Before that, we only had two laptops. And then Mom and Dad bought two more,”says 12-year-old Markus. “Now we have four laptops and one computer. We can all study normally now."
A large family is a cure for loneliness
For the Neufeld family, homeschooling became possible only because Anastasia's mother is on parental leave. She simply has no idea what would have happened to them if she had to work, and even also at home. For Anastasia it would have been unthinkable! “I endlessly admire mothers who, for example, may only have two children, but they also work. Just thinking about small children in a home office makes me sick! I don’t know how others deal with it.”
Homeschooling in a large family has one undeniable advantage: no one is alone here, even during isolation.
