For many centuries, the inhabitants of the Caucasus have lived at the intersection of different cultures, which often became the cause of interethnic conflicts. In such conditions, the problem of family survival and procreation is especially acute. And although today free relationships have become the norm in many European countries, Caucasians in matters of marriage remain faithful to traditions, while presenting very strict requirements to their future wife.

In the cultures of many peoples, it is customary to calmly relate to the fact that unmarried women meet with someone and enter into intimate relationships. But in the Caucasus, this is out of the question. Even a widow cannot afford to have a "friend." Strict moral norms exclude any intimacy before the wedding, and for violation of unwritten laws, blood was often shed both by a girl and her lover.

Educated girls were not considered good wives in the Caucasus. After all, such a wife may prefer a career to a household, and her husband may not always obey. In some places, this prejudice is still alive today. In many villages, the traditional ransom (kalym) for girls who received a higher education diploma is much less than for those who did not sit up for textbooks.

The inhabitants of the Caucasus often struggled with great difficulty for the survival of their kind. Therefore, only a girl who was considered healthy and capable of bearing many children could become a highlander's wife. Any defects or ailments could interfere with the wedding.

Until the twentieth century, divorced women were not popular among the Caucasian highlanders. They preferred to take young and chaste girls as wives. True, a man could take the wife of his deceased brother to his house, as this was considered a sign of respect for the deceased.

Today, representatives of more than 50 peoples live on the territory of the Caucasus, who still retain their individuality. This was possible thanks to a long tradition not to take a foreigner into the family. No matter how a man is in love, his family members will oppose a possible marriage with a representative of another culture. This is fraught with inevitable violation of the established way of life and further quarrels with the daughter-in-law.

As you can see, it is not easy for a man from the Caucasus to choose a wife. But the one who finds his "soul mate" can repeat the success an elderly couple who have celebrated 96 years of a happy married life.
