There are only two great cities in the world that are more akin to water than to land. These are Venice and St. Petersburg. And only one of these beautiful cities hosts a carnival every year, which has inspired artists and poets for centuries, described in countless books and featured in countless films. This is Venice.
Back in 1296, the Senate of the Venetian Republic declared the last day before Lent as a general holiday. Since that time, the history of the famous carnival, which takes place in late January and early February, is counted. Despite the millions of tourists scurrying through the streets of the ancient city, it is not so easy to see a human face among them. This is because the faces are covered with stunningly beautiful and mysterious masks.
The tradition of wearing these masks at the carnival dates back to ancient Roman times, but its meaning is clear even now: anonymity unleashes, frees the human soul from conventions. At the carnival, you need to feel like a different person - brave and free, and then you will feel the real spirit of this element.
Each of the classic masks has its own history and name - Moretta, Columbine, Volto, Valerie, Gatto … The Doctor's mask with a long bird's beak reminds of the legendary times of the plague - the one that destroyed a quarter of Europe, and thanks to which the Decameron appeared. The mystical Moretto made of black velvet is the look for the most mysterious and dangerous fans of the carnival; Gatto - The Cat is a cheerful adventurer; Dama di Venezia is a sophisticated beauty …
Carnival in Venice is not just a fun theatrical performance. Ancient stone houses look formidable and majestic in combination with the gray winter waters of the Adriatic Sea - like the walls of a fortress erected by land against warlike waves. Smiling and at the same time dispassionate masks, covered with a pretentious bright pattern, instill in the heart some mystical feelings, symbolizing the eternal mystery of the human soul.
