Venice is the "northern pearl" of Italy, standing on the islands and inspiring many creators with its amazing, enchanting atmosphere of an eternal holiday. The Venice Carnival is an integral symbol of this city. It has almost a thousand-year history, during which a tradition has developed: to hide your face under a mask during celebrations. And photographer Jean-Philippe Poli, fascinated by their magic, has created a wonderful series of bright, stylish, beautiful carnival masks.
Jean-Philippe Poli discovered his love of photography while traveling in Greece in 1987. He admits that on that trip, looking at tourists, he once and for all understood how not to shoot. This was the first step to success. The second was the passion for modern technology, the photographer believes that using the best modern equipment is simply necessary to achieve the desired goal.
Jean-Philippe Poli says: “I am an eternal wanderer and never miss the opportunity to see new places, meet new people. I try to live life to the fullest, filling every day with new experiences. But my main muses are not travels, but my wife and daughter. And I am very grateful to them for that."
Most of the photographer's works are made in black and white, he admits that he discovered the world of bright colors quite late and still prefers the black and white gamut that is familiar to him. But for some projects, such as photographs of masks, or for other commercial orders (this series belongs to them) Jean-Philippe Poli still uses bright colors.
Jean-Philippe Poli, a talented artist, was clearly not mistaken in choosing bright, saturated colors for a series of photographs with masks, because they are the ones that carry the carnival Venetian mood. Richly embroidered fabrics, decorations and, first of all, the masks themselves look very bright and beautiful. These photos perfectly convey the atmosphere of intrigue and mysterious reticence, but at the same time the exuberant joy and challenge that reigns during the exuberant Italian holidays.
