It is unlikely that anyone will seriously look for a deep philosophical background in this funny and frivolous series of photographs, ingeniously entitled "Chewing gum". On the other hand, he who seeks will always find.
Images of carefree children blowing gum bubbles with a focused or goofy expression on their faces unpretentiously cheer up viewers of all ages without the need for a sophisticated CONCEPT. However, series author Emily Stein has taken care of that too.
The poetic description for the project, which the photographer posted on her website, reads: “Gum is a series of portraits of children and adolescents taken on a beach in New York State in the summer of 2013. The transience of adolescence has always been a popular theme in the history of Western painting. In the symbolic language of this tradition, bubbles represent the transience of life. The Gum series is in the same thematic field. Chewing gum is used as a practical way to get young participants into an incredibly diverse range of facial expressions. In this way, the episode reminds us not to focus solely on the fragility of adolescence. We must enjoy its spontaneity and uniqueness."
Emily Stein first became interested in photography during her final year at art college. She began photographing teenagers who were taking part in one of her educational work. “As soon as I started this project, I was fascinated by the opportunity to photograph people whom I would never have met under other circumstances,” the artist recalls.
Childhood is a theme that Stein invariably returns to. “I love photographing models of all ages, but I still pay more attention to young characters,” she says. - I think this is because children are so sincere and open, and this shows up in the photographs. It's also possible that part of me just doesn't want to grow up."

Somewhere a piece of gum blocked the passage, somewhere it stuck to the asphalt and melted, becoming a huge puddle, or even impudently sticks out in the middle of the street like a pillar … By the way, the sculptor Simone Decker is blamed for this incident
