On June 28, the winners of the Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky International Competition, which was held in St. Petersburg for the sixteenth time, became known. In the "Solo Singing" nomination, the first prize and the gold medal were taken by vocalists from Greece and the Russian Federation. This decision was announced by the jury of the competition immediately after the final auditions held at the Mariinsky Theater on the New Stage.

The vocalist from Russia, who was awarded the prestigious award, was Maria Barakova, who is only 21 years old. This is the youngest participant of the competition who managed to reach the final. She received her education at the Novosibirsk College of Music, after which she became a student at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. In 2017, Barakova became an artist of the Bolshoi Theater Youth Opera Program.

The second winner of the jury was named Alexandros Stavrakakis. He was educated at the Athens Conservatory, was able to earn a Maria Callas scholarship. He continued to receive his musical education at the Dresden Academy of Music under Matthias Henneberg and Lyudmila Ivanova. From 2016 to 2018, Stavrakakis was an artist of the Youth Program at the Dresden Opera. This season he is a member of the Russian Bolshoi Theater Opera Company, or rather is its soloist.

During the final performances, the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra played and was directed by Mikhail Sinkevich. The jury member this time was Sarah Billinghurst-Solomon, who thanked the rest of the jury members and organizers for hosting such an event. During her speech, she congratulated the laureates of the competition. The chairman of the jury also spoke about the decision to introduce a new award in memory of Dmitry Hvorostovsky, an outstanding singer. The prize, named after him, will now be presented to constantly promising young singers. The first owner of such an award was Vladislav Kupriyanov from Moscow.

The second place in the competition was decided to be awarded to Aigul Khismatullina from Russia and Kim Gihun from the Republic of Korea. They also received silver furniture. Maria Motolygina and Migran Aghajanyan from Russia won the third place and, accordingly, bronze medals. The fourth prize was awarded to singer from Mongolia Ankhbayar Enkhbold, singer from Russia Oksana Mayorova and singer from Uzbekistan Angelina Akhmedova.
