When talking about the nature of Australia, people most often think of kangaroos and huge insects. However, this mainland can surprise the unprepared tourist with its incredible beauty and amazing creatures, with which few people in other parts of the world are familiar. In the competition for the best nature photographer in Australia in 2019, for example, Mat Beatson won with a shot taken from a drone - on it in emerald water sharks circle around a dead huge whale.
Winner of competition
A total of 2,219 entries took part in this competition (2019 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year), and Mat Beatson's photograph was recognized as the best of them. This shot was taken very close to the shore - the whale was literally five meters from the sandy edge of the sea. “It was so amazing, unreal. We arrived at a peaceful coastal town and suddenly saw this huge whale at the very shore. And then we noticed in the water the tracks of the arriving sharks.
The South Australian Museum acted as a jury and sponsor of the awards. They explained their choice in favor of the whale photo that it was a unique shot. “For tens of years we have seen millions of photographs of nature, but we have never seen anything even approximately similar to this. It is unique, it is delightful, and it shows the incredible beauty of death."

Australian echidna
“I followed this snide for two days,” says Charles Davis. - Her footprints in the snow led me through kilometers and kilometers from one fallen tree to another. When I finally caught up with her, I was already 2000 meters above sea level. And the echidna didn’t care about the abundance of snow and ice around”.
