Briton Antony Gormley, perhaps, is one of the most famous sculptors of our time. The works of this artist demonstrate his unquenchable interest in understanding the human essence. One of his iconic installations bears the name Another Place, she brought worldwide popularity to her creator.
If we make a brief overview of Anthony Gormley's work, then it would be appropriate to recall the projects in which the master deconstructed his own body, drew the audience's attention to the fact that the number of people in the world had reached a critical mass, experimented with the curvature of empty space with the help of mirrors and “stamped” endless number of clay figurines. At the heart of all these projects is the process of knowing the human body.
Installation "Another Place" represents 100 cast-iron human figures 189 cm high and weighing 650 kg. The figures are located on Crosby Beach, located north of Liverpool (England), they occupy about 2 km of coastline. After the coastal line was "flooded" with cast-iron sculptures, Crosby has become a local attraction, tourists from all over the world come here.
Before settling in Crosby, the cast-iron people traveled a lot. They were scattered across different European countries, in particular, they visited the beaches of Germany, Norway and Belgium, and were supposed to go to New York, but several English museums asked to leave the sculptures in their homeland and install them on a permanent basis. It was 2007. Since then, cast-iron sculptures have steadfastly guarded the coast, although during high tides some of them plunge into the sea. Some knee-deep, some chest-deep.
Each of the sculptures was made in the image and likeness of Antony Gormley himself, keeping the proportions of his body. They are all set facing the sea. By the way, the installation also has a kind of "message" that the author wants to convey to people: the sculptures personify emigrants who sadly leave their country, but hope for a bright future in the new land.
