Do you trust your eyes? How much can you trust the vestibular apparatus? What sense organs can fail a person, and which ones are true to him under any circumstances? These are the questions the artist is asking Antony Gormley in your installation Horizon field hamburg.
Anthony Gormley is one of the most famous contemporary artists. He became famous thanks to his work, in which he tries to understand the human body and his feelings in a new way. Examples of this statement include the deconstructivist series of sculptures by this author, or the critical mass of bodies in the installation Critical Mass.
And a new work from Anthony Gormley is devoted to the issue of a person's spatial orientation and his trust in his senses.
The Horizon Field Hamburg installation is a fairly large platform, anchored seven and a half meters above floor level. Moreover, this platform has a matte, almost mirror-like surface.
People can walk on this platform without any problems. If, of course, they can cope with the spatial disorientation. After all, the mirror surface of the floor visually doubles the space of the room.
Moreover, one has only to look beyond this platform to realize that you are not on the floor, but at a certain height, and, therefore, that your eyes and other senses lied to you before. However, the fact that something is wrong in all this may be evidenced by the fact that this huge mirrored floor sways a little when people move.
Anthony Gormley himself explains the idea of the Horizon Field Hamburg installation by his desire to wean a person from blindly trusting the senses, to reorient a person, to make him rethink his position in space and life.
