Video: Last Week's Best Photos (January 14-20) from National Geographic
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
Each series of photographs from National Geographic this is a fascinating book about distant countries and interesting events, wonderful landscapes and strange animals, unusual people and colorful types. Today's selection of the best photographs collected by the editors of the magazine for January 14-20, 2012 will not be an exception.

Gelads, close relatives of monkeys and baboons, live exclusively on the high plateaus of Ethiopia, and have a very absurd character. They live in groups, either resembling a harem, with one dominant male and several females, or a purely male bachelor company. Males often arrange bloody battles, using sharp teeth on powerful jaws, both in order to win back someone else's "harem", and in pursuit of the "chair" of the leader of a bachelor group. How such a battle develops can be seen in a picturesque photograph.

Looking at this photo, brought back by a photographer from Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, you might think that the stingrays were in a long-distance race, and just at that moment they entered the home stretch.

Eurasian otters, inhabitants of the Shetland Islands, in the life of a single mother. This is inherent in nature - men do not live with their families and do not take part in raising their offspring. The photo shows a mother and two cubs, watching the photographer with curiosity. One of the kids has a characteristic abrasion on his nose, which all boys have after active games or random clashes with peers.

Nothing bad happened to this huge South African lion. The king of beasts simply took a nap in the soft grass, resting after a long exhausting day.

A little more, and the ladybug could be suspected of imitating chameleons. She very well chose a daylily flower to hide in its middle. And to select a "house" to match the color of the "outfit", in our case - a beautiful red-orange shade, this is the exceptional talent of a real lady (Ladybug - ladybug).

In the animal world, just like in humans, babies are often miniature copies of adults, and it is so touching to watch these small copies in flocks follow the majestically marching parents in front! But the striped baby foal in the photo can be sure that even walking in front, his parent is still keenly watching to ensure that the child remains safe.
January 20th
The endless expanses of Iceland, fields with lush green grass under the cool blue sky, mountain landscapes in the distance - and horses, many horses of one of the most ancient breeds, which have been raised here since the 10th century, and all this time have been preserved in their original form. That is why animals walking along the hills and valleys of this wonderful area feel free and at ease. In Iceland, it is very difficult to see a landscape that is not decorated with horses, because they are not just pets here, but also an object of universal love and national pride.
