Progress is striding forward by leaps and bounds, and this is especially noticeable in the field of computer technology. Not so long ago, the main storage medium was a floppy disk, but now we remember it only with surprise: what could be placed on some 2 MB? A couple of decades - and from a useful invention, a floppy disk has turned into an obsolete and unnecessary thing. Unnecessary in the computer world, but not in the art world.
Our hero today, Nick Gentry, after graduating in 2006 from the Central College of St. Martin in London, seriously concerned himself with the problem of the influence of technological progress on our society. At all times, people tried to record information on various physical objects, but especially succeeded in this in the 20th century, when photographic film, audio and video cassettes, disks and floppy disks became widespread. But Nick notes that old formats are being replaced by new ones, and there is a shift from specific material carriers to intangible information located in the global network.
At this stage, Nick Gentry came up with the idea to use outdated media as canvases for his paintings. The author's work, as he himself explains, is a new round in the life cycle of a floppy disk: it was created, used to store information, is outdated and now it has found a new life in the artist's hands. In addition to floppy disks, Nick also draws on audio and video cassettes, organically fitting them into his works.
An indispensable condition in Nick's work is the use of floppy disks that have already been in use and have their own history. In this regard, the author appeals to everyone with an appeal to send him old media. “Your thing will be in the gallery, not in the trash can,” the artist says.
