Daniel Buren, the greatest living artist in France, presented his new work Catch as Catch Can at the BALTIC Center in Gateshead (UK). It will be possible to admire the color installation until October 12 of this year.

The fourth floor of the BALTIC Center gallery is practically empty: no outlandish art objects or sculptures. Everything here is based on the play of light and color, with which Buren so skillfully manipulates. The master had previously glued the windows of the gallery with colored film, and placed several rectangular mirrors on the floor. They are tilted in a special way, which allows the artist to manipulate the reflections, expanding and deepening the space. “Playing with color always brings joy,” says the artist, “it is color that helps us to resist our rather dark world”.

Buren is widely regarded as one of the most influential and important figures in contemporary art. The artist was born in 1938 in France. He received an excellent specialized education in Paris (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d'Art Higher School of Arts). In the 60s, he completely abandoned traditional painting in favor of a rather radical form of conceptual art. Then Buren completely focused on the image of color stripes of equal width. Later, this concept was transferred to the master's installations, albeit in a slightly modified form. At one of the artist's last exhibitions, held at the MaMo Center for Contemporary Art, one could see examples of such works.

The exhibition titled Défini, Fini, Infini is seven different-sized installations, to create which Buren used various combinations of mirrors, colored panels and translucent sheets.
