There is an opinion that women are monogamous, but men by their nature seek diversity, however ancient tradition of polyandry in Tibet absolutely refutes this belief. It has long been customary here to give girls in marriage at once to all the brothers in the family. Such an unusual relationship is a guarantee of financial well-being, since the family's property multiplies from generation to generation.
For us, the relationship in polygamous Tibetan families is more than amazing. According to an established tradition, the eldest son in the family chooses a wife, and the younger brothers get her "by default." Of course, having many husbands is considered a success, because this means that the family will be rich. If a man, for some reason, wants to marry another woman, and not tie his life with a "clan" wife, then he should separate from his personal property and not claim that belongs to the family.
As for women, they are quite satisfied with this model of relationships. The wife has different feelings for each of the husbands, but everyone tries to please her in the same way. The more diligently men work for the good of the family, the more chances they have to be in the status of "loved one." If the husband does not care about the common good, the wife may even kick him out of the house (although she will first have a conversation in which the mother-in-law will ask to take pity on the unlucky son).
As for the marital "duty", here often everything is also out of love: the wife spends time with each of the brothers, but can often choose who is more dear to her. Children who are born into a family are brought up by common forces, but the elder brother is considered a father for them. There are cases when younger brothers can find secret wives (in fact, mistresses), but the children born to them have no rights. As a rule, mistresses are not helped to raise children. Even more surprising are the cases when in a polygamous family one of the husbands can be an "outsider". This happens when an heir is not born in the union, thus, the woman manages to become pregnant.
In Tibet, girls are proud of their love affairs. Fans often give them special coins, the necklace of which is considered a measure of a young lady's success. The more coins, the more enviable the bride. If foreigners are on the track record, then the woman can decorate the necklace with a coral ball.
Polygamous unions still exist in different parts of the world. For example, in India lives the largest family in the world, in which 1 husband, 39 wives and 95 children!
