St Martin-in-the-Fields - one of the most famous churches in London. It is located in the very center of the city, on the corner of Trafalgar Square, among its parishioners you can often see the royal family. Despite the external orthodoxy, there is one "zest" in it that boggles the mind. it "East window"by Iranian-born designer Shirazeh Houshiary. It resembles a cross reflected on the surface of the water.
The church was built in 1726 by the architect James Gibbs, but the unusual window was created much later, already in the 21st century. In the early 2000s, the church was closed for restoration, and then this innovation appeared in the familiar appearance of the building. Thanks to the original design, it was possible to achieve greater illumination of the eastern part of the building.
The window frame is made of stainless steel, glass panels are hand-made into the holes. It was this window that was not altered by chance: during the Second World War, the eastern part of the building was damaged during the bombing, the original stained glass windows have not survived.
Art critics perceived the innovation ambiguously, although Shirazeh Houshiary commented on his concept: “The universe is in a stage of gradual decay, is constantly being destroyed. We are striving to stabilize the order of things. This intense aspiration delighted me and served as the impetus for my work."
