The faster megacities are built up, the more often people think about the need for landscaping a concrete jungle. When there is not enough space to create squares and equip parks, eco-architects are thinking about creating green islands on the rooftops of high-rise buildings. Gradually "green roofs" cease to be a curiosity. One of the most famous adorns the 11-storey building City Hall in Chicago (Illinois).
The idea of using roofs as additional living space is not new: in Dubai, tennis courts are being built on skyscrapers, in London, cinemas are being equipped. But the Americans lined up City Hall Rooftop Garden - an original park in the middle of a noisy and smoky metropolis. The green Chicago roof immediately became one of the most famous local attractions.
The eco-roof design project started in 2001 with the support of the Conservation Design Forum. Calculations have shown that a green roof can have a beneficial effect on temperature changes in a room, absorbing excess heat in summer and preventing hypothermia in winter. This makes it possible to save money on air conditioning of the building. In addition, the rooftop ecosystem purifies rainwater, "unloading" drainage systems, and, of course, contributes to the purification of urban air, which certainly improves the overall state of the ecology of the city.
Local plants that are resistant to windy climates have been used to create the unique Roof Garden. In total, about 20 thousand plants were planted, including more than 150 species of shrubs and vines, as well as two trees. Visitors to the park can enjoy beautiful landscaping that contrasts with the surrounding "concrete" world.
By the way, the concept of the Chicago green roof is close to the "hanging gardens" in the Japanese Namba park, which we previously told the readers of the site Culturology. Ru. Terraced gardens also save space when landscaping large cities, becoming true masterpieces of modern eco-architecture.

If you still doubt that the Magic Land of Oz exists, then finally all doubts can be dropped. Otherwise, how to explain the green river in the center of Chicago from where did it come from? It flows from the Emerald City. However, for those who are still accustomed to finding an explanation for any paradox, we reveal a secret: in such an unusual way, Americans celebrate one of the funniest holidays of the year - St. Patrick's Day
Plant for the Planet, a green art project made from green leaves
By the will of fate, in English the word plant means both a factory and plants - two objects that have a completely polar impact on the environment. Some pollute it, others clean it … This eternal problem of mankind was dedicated to a "green" art project called Plant for the Planet
Green grove instead of the usual cemetery: capsule coffins for eco-burial
Ideas about the reincarnation of the soul have not left humanity for millennia, but it is customary to treat a mortal body in different cultures in different ways. Some are buried in the ground, the second are cremated, and still others are given to be eaten by predators. From now on, another alternative has appeared: the bodies of the dead are proposed to be returned to the ground in a special capsule, from which a tree later grows
Arctic Fox on the Roof: South African Green Advertisement
“From now on, green is white,” read the posters. Are we really talking about the Makhnovist defectors? Unfortunately, the realities of the Civil War have nothing to do with it. It's just that green advertising suggests stopping global warming in a non-standard way - by painting the rails in green, roofs of houses with white paint. White roofs will "scare off" the sun's rays, the earth's surface will heat less, and northern fur-bearing animals will change their minds to die out
