People loved, and many still love to decorate the house with weapons. Let the gun hanging on the wall owe nothing to anyone for a long time, but the cold and gunshot "toys" on the walls in the old fashioned way signal to the guests that the owner is a serious person and, if something is not according to him, will be able to stand up for himself. And if he has Mati Karmin's exclusive furniture made of sea mines in his office, it is better to give up without a fight.
Estonian sculptor Mati Karmin began with classical bronze, honing his skills year after year. Until one day I decided to experiment. As early as 30 years ago, in 1981, he created a sculpture from rusted metal parts that were only suitable for scrap metal. And since then it started spinning.
Each artist has his own handy material: one creates art furniture from coins, the other from cow cakes. Five years ago Mati Karmin started an interesting project. The sculptor began to create exclusive furniture from sea anti-landing mines.
The northern coast of Estonia, and especially the islands, are simply strewn with this goodness. The sight of rusty leaky mine hulls inspired Mati Karmin to a new job. He began to collect them and try on what can be done from such an ambiguous material.
The possibilities of the material turned out to be quite impressive. History buff Mati Karmin appreciated both the connection to the past and the destructive beginnings with which sea mines are associated.
The whole variety of Mati Karmina furniture is based on only two types of mines: spherical and cylindrical. Armchairs, writing and coffee tables, beds, wardrobes, swings, bathtubs are made of them … All surfaces are carefully processed. The products are functional and do not crumble at the first touch. And, again, at the hand of the master, faceless military scrap metal turns into exclusive furniture with a recognizable appearance.
Copper parts, leather, granite, glass are trying to balance the rough texture of scrap metal - but foreign elements only enhance the contrast. The combination of the incongruous causes either rejection or laughter. So, the humor of the master, who made a rattle out of pomegranates, just like a wheelchair from a sea mine, makes us appreciate his resourcefulness. Or maybe even go to his website.
