Video: Reflections in Glass: Graham Caldwell Sculpture Exhibition

37-year-old American Graham Caldwell lives and works in Washington, but his studio is in real Tashkent even in winter. And all because the master is dealing with red-hot glass heated to 2 thousand degrees Celsius. Simple and unobtrusive works that can be seen in the exhibition of sculptures by Graham Caldwell, sometimes reflect the room and the viewer in dozens of small mirrors, or resemble colored molecules.
Being a glassblower is not easy. You will burn yourself with glass (although Graham claims that his favorite material does not burn as much as, for example, hot steam), then with hot metal. But a person gets used to everything if he has an interesting goal. And creating glass sculptures, according to the master, is very interesting.
How did Graham Caldwell get started in glassblowing? During his life in New York, he once went into a glassblowing studio near his home in Brooklyn. And everything started spinning. After several amateur attempts to create something memorable, he realized that it was necessary to learn, learn and learn. For which, in fact, he went to the Rhode Island School of Design and successfully graduated from it. It was 13 years ago.
Since then, Graham Caldwell has been working with fragile and beautiful material. The master compares the process of blowing glass to inflating a balloon: just as a voluminous and light toy that will bring joy to kids is obtained from a small nondescript patch, fragile beauty can be blown out of a drop of glass.
In order to make a glass miracle, you cannot do without special skills that need to be developed for a long time. This is why this difficult craft is not as common as Graham Caldwell would have liked.
Graham Caldwell does not create complete works. His sculptures or glass installations consist of many similar parts. The master is limited to black, white, gray and red colors. Not so hot what a wide palette makes it possible to focus on the material and form of work. Spheres, "teeth", drops, curved surfaces reflect the room where the sculpture exhibition is taking place and the audience reflecting on the amusing works.

Glass knitting. Art-glass by Erwin Timmers
Looking at the abundance of knitted works of art, it seems that the designers, as one, suddenly remembered that they were once taught to knit, and began to revive their former skills. The artist discussed in this article, Erwin Timmers, is also into knitting, but in a specific way. He is called a "glass designer" because he knows how to get amazing things out of this complex, naughty and very fragile material. Accordingly, he has the same knitting
Bohemian glass engraving. Glass art by Heather Gillespie
Glass is like honey: if you melt it, it will be just as transparent and thick, viscous and malleable. Probably, this association became one of the reasons why the British artist Heather Gillespie prefers to work with glass, and she chose the appropriate specialization at the local university - an engraver on glass, and not on any glass, but on the famous Bohemian
A botanical garden instead of a museum. Exhibition of glass sculptures by Hans Godot Frabel
A trip to the museum, sadly enough, does not cause any enthusiasm among many: an enclosed space, dusty exhibits hidden behind glass … exhibition halls. An original solution to the problem was found in Richmond (Virginia): the role of the museum was played by the botanical garden, on the territory of which works of art were placed - glass works by Hans Godo Frabel.
